Polycystic Ovarian Disease

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a hormonal condition that affects approximately 5- 10% of women in their childbearing ages (12 to 45 years)  In PCOD the woman ovaries produce immature or partially mature eggs in large numbers and over the time these become cysts in ovaries. Due to this ovaries become large and secrete large amount of male hormones (androgens). This leads to various symptoms, including the absence of ovulation, irregular menstrual periods, difficulty conceiving, weight gain, acne, and hirsutism. PCOD can lead to increased levels of inflammation in women. And being overweight also can contribute to inflammation.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients are not always markedly overweight but PCOS is strongly associated with abdominal obesity and insulin resistance. About 70% women with PCOD have peripheral insulin resistance. Due to the presence of insulin resistance, PCOS increases the risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, cardiovascular diseases and malignancies such as breast and endometrial cancer. PCOD can be controlled by diet and lifestyle modifications.

At Pro Health Diet Clinic , our approach of the diet therapy is to improve insulin resistance, metabolic and reproductive functions through the planning of low-calorie diet to achieve weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight, limit the intake of simple sugars and refined carbohydrates and intake of low glycaemic index foods, reduction of saturated and trans fatty acids and special attention to possible deficiencies like vitamin D, chromium and omega-3. These measures will help to manage infertility, hirsutism, acne, immature follicles, and obesity.
