Liver Disorders
Liver is one of the biggest organs and is responsible for detoxing the body, breaking down carbohydrates and making glucose. Liver stores the essential nutrients and creates bile, which is necessary to digest and absorb nutrients from food. Certain viruses, infections, alcohol addiction, and obesity can not only damage but also lead to scarring or cirrhosis of the liver. Prolonged damage and cirrhosis can lead to liver failure which is a life-threatening condition.
Chronic liver diseases (CLD) cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide and is the tenth most common cause of death in India as per the World Health Organization. Common risk factors for CLD are alcohol, chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, non- alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), malnutrition, toxins, and some tropical infections. Easy access to calorie-dense food and sedentary lifestyle together with the modern epidemics of diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity have catapulted non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) into a substantial public health problem in India. The prevalence of NAFLD among the general population in India ranges from 9% to 53%.
Liver treatment is very specific to the diagnosis & condition. While some liver problems are treated with medications, some liver problems are treated with lifestyle changes. These changes may include zero alcohol consumption, weight loss, or a change in the diet, which helps the liver to heal. Lifestyle changes help to improve liver health.
At Pro Health Diet Clinic, we advise the patient to quit alcohol and avoid certain red meat, trans fats, processed carbohydrates, high fat diet. Lifestyles changes also include a moderate-intensity exercise of 30 to 60 minutes around twice or thrice a week. Obese patients are asked to shed 500 to 1,000 calories daily. Though it is not possible to manage all the risk factors, consuming certain foods and drinks can promote liver health and thereby protect it.
