Gout
Gout is the most common type of painful form of arthritis causing pain and
swelling in one or more joints. Gout is caused by deposition of monosodium
urate crystals in joints and various other tissues and appears in relation to
chronic hyperuricemia. When the body has extra uric acid, sharp crystals may form in the big toe causing episodes of swelling and pain called gout attacks. Gout usually starts in the big toe but can affect other joints. Gout can affect anyone. It usually occurs earlier in men than women. Untreated gout can lead to permanent joint damage. The build-up of uric acid in the joints and soft tissue is called tophus.
Risk factors for developing hyperuricemia and gout include, non-modifiable
risk factors (sex, age, race, and genetics) and modifiable risk factors, such as
diet and lifestyle. The main causative factors for primary gout seems to be diet and genetic polymorphisms of renal transporters of urate. Gout is a treatable condition, and the uric acid level can be decreased by medication and lifestyle changes.
At Pro Heath Diet Clinic, we discuss & suggest changes that you can make to your diet and lifestyle which will help and can reduce uric acid levels to prevent and reduce gout attacks. Weight reduction with daily exercise and limiting intake of red meat and sugary beverages would help reduce uric acid levels, the risk of gout, insulin resistance, and comorbidities.
