Diabetes

The rising prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases has been linked to rapid urbanization, globalization coupled with increasing sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, overweight and obesity, tobacco use and increasing life expectancy.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Globally, T2DM is at present one of the most common diseases and its levels are progressively on the rise. It has been evaluated that around 366 million people worldwide or 8.3% in the age group of 20-79 years had T2DM in 2011. This figure is expected to rise to 552 million (9.9%) by 2030. Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing  ountries. Men and women around the globe have gained weight, largely due to changes in dietary patterns and decreased physical activity levels In type 2 diabetics.

Excess adiposity reflected by higher body mass index (BMI) is the strongest risk factor for diabetes, and Asians tend to develop diabetes at a much lower BMI than those of European ancestry. Diabetes is of three major types, based on etiology and clinical features. These are type 1 (T1DM), type 2 (T2DM), and Gestational DM (GDM). Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent, juvenile or childhood-onset) is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin. Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent, or adult- onset) results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin. There is insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. More than 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. These women and possibly their children are also at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the future. Diabetes can arise from other diseases as well, such as genetic syndromes, surgery, malnutrition, infections, and due to drugs such as corticosteroids intake.

Diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Neuropathy (nerve damage) in the feet increases the chance of foot ulcers, infection and eventual need for limb amputation, Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness, and Diabetes is also the leading cause of kidney failure.

Diets rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, moderate in alcohol consumption, and lower in refined grains, red/processed meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages have shown to reduce diabetes risk and improve glycemic control and blood lipids in patients with diabetes.

At Pro health Diet Clinic , the burden of Diabetes on your lifestyle can be significantly reduced by bringing behavioural changes which favour healthy balanced diet and regular physical activity.
