Cancer
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly one in six deaths. More than 1.3 million new patients are diagnosed with cancer and over 850,000 patients die of the disease annually in India. Among men, the projected incidence was 94.1 per 100,000 individuals and for women; it was 103.6 per 100,000 individuals for 2020, according to the Cancer Statistics Report, 2020.
Cancer arises from the transformation of normal cells into tumor cells in a multi-stage process that generally progresses from a pre-cancerous lesion to a malignant tumor. The five leading sites of the disease are breast, lung, mouth, cervix, uteri and tongue, researchers found. Around one-third of deaths from cancer are due to tobacco use, high body mass index, alcohol consumption, low fruit and vegetable intake, and lack of physical activity.
Good nutrition is important for cancer patients. Healthy eating habits are important during and after cancer treatment. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during, and after cancer treatment can help the patient feel better and stay stronger. A healthy diet includes eating and drinking enough of the foods and liquids that have important nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fat, and water) the body needs. Eating the right amount of protein and calories is important for healing, fighting infection, and having enough energy. A registered dietician can work with patients and their families to counsel them on ways to improve the patient’s nutrition.
In our Prohealth diet clinic the dietitian gives care based on the patient’s nutrition and diet needs. Changes to the diet are made to help decrease symptoms from cancer or cancer treatment. These changes are discussed in planning the types and amount of food, how often a patient eats, and how food is eaten. In addition to counseling by our dietitian, and changes to the diet, nutrition therapy is provided which includes nutritional supplement drinks, and enteral and parenteral nutrition support. Nutritional supplement drinks help cancer patients get the nutrients they need.
