The term organic farming means no artificial pesticides, no herbicides,
no hormones and certainly no growth promoters or food irradiation or Ionizing
radiations which is a way to preserve food with radiation energy. Organic farming
involves cultivation of plants and rearing of animals in natural ways. This involves
the use of biological materials, avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil
fertility and ecological balance thereby minimizing pollution and wastage. This
means nurturing crops without the use of synthetic based fertilizers and also without
genetically modified organisms. Even organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy
products come from anima ls that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones.
Organic farming relies on agricultural principles like crop rotation,
green manure, organic waste, biological pest control, mineral and rock additives.
Organic food tastes better, has natural taste , texture and colors.
Regarding nutritional benefits, there is not enough evidence that organic foods are
more or less nutritious than non organic foods. Foods like vegetables, fruits, whole
grains, lean meats, low fat dairy products, legumes and eggs are all nutritious
whether they are organically grown or not. Organic foods are healthier because they
have far less residues of pesticides, growth promoters and antibiotics, because
prolonged use of chemicals dramatically reduces the nutritional value of crop s. Also
organic foods contain higher levels of essential minerals, vitamins and anti oxidants.
While the cooking process remains same for organic food, meals are
enhanced as the ingredients one of a better quality and are packed with flavor and
nutrition.
